Vervain Mill - Nevis, West Indies

Taylor's Pocket Map

Vervain Mill - In Gingerland, take the road to Hickmann’s Village.  Landmarks to watch for include Elliott’s Funeral Parlor just south toward Gingerland Center.  Square stone water “fort” on corner of our road down the hill.

Golden Rock Estate - Enjoy lunch with a view in the gazebo or dinner on their new terrace.  This is the starting place for a nature walk or walk to “the source.”

BestBuy - Our closest grocery store.  They are well stocked and open 7-days/week.

White Bay Beach - “Our beach” on the windward side.  Take Hanley’s Road in Gingerland (watch the huge bump by the parish church), to the bottom of the hill.  Turn left at the intersection in the fields, and go past the racetrack.  You will end up on the sand.  Play cautiously in the surf.

Old Manor Estate - Beautiful grounds and sugar making ruins.

Hermitage Plantation -  Beautiful old plantation.  Good for breakfast or Sunday brunch and a walk around the grounds.

Botanical Gardens - Go toward Montpelier, then follow signs to the Botanical Gardens.  Nice spot for lunch and a tour of their gift shop.

Montpelier Estate - Very good restaurant - highly recommended by Vervain guests - and beautiful grounds.

Ram’s - Big grocery store on the outskirts of town.

Charlestown - Charlestown is a working town with banks, drug stores, grocery stores, restaurants, a few boutiques, and the public market.  Best to go in the morning when it’s cooler.

SuperFoods - Nice small store with a good wine selection and a pastry shop.

The Public Market - Fresh produce at this open air market daily except Sunday.  Busiest days are
Saturday and the day the fruit boat arrives.

Unella’s Waterfront Restaurant - West Indian lunches with a view of the waterfront.

Café des Arts - Good restaurant run by the owners of Bananas.

Museum of Nevis History - Museum on the waterfront in the Hamilton House run by Nevis Historical Society.  Good selection of books and cards.

Pinneys Beach Hotel - Nice water views and lunch menu.

Sunshine’s - Sunshine’s is an island icon.  Very casual beach restaurant with grilled lobster and “killer bee” rum drinks.

The Four Seasons - Unfortunately this beautiful hotel is closed for repairs.  Golf course is still open.

Oualie Beach - Snorkeling trips and fishing excursions begin here.  Casual restaurant on the beach.

Beach at Fort Ashby - Pull onto the beach to the right of the old fort.  Lock up the car and enjoy a walk and swim on this uncrowded stretch of beach.

Bananas - Now located on Government Road, this is an atmospheric restaurant with very nice food.  One of our favorite dinner spots.

Sea Bridge - Take your car on the ferry to St. Kitts for a day.  Enjoy shopping in town, a tour around the island, lunch at one of the old plantations or on the beach at Turtle Bay looking back at nevis.

Cottle Church - Beautiful ruins of an 1824 church.  Easy walk.

Mount Nevis Hotel - Beautiful views looking over to St. Kitts.  Call for lunch and dinner hours.

Newcastle Pottery - Motto is “Clay ain’t dirt.”  Hand made pottery fired over a coconut husk fire.  Our outdoor light covers were made here.

Nisbet Plantation Beach Club - Beach bar for lunch and a swim.  Great Thursday evening fish buffet with rum punches and live music.  Call for reservations.  Taxi is a good idea after the rum punches.

New River Estate and Coconut Walk - Beautiful ruins of wind-powered and steam-powered mills.  Walk to the arched lime kiln on the shore.  Cooler in the morning.  Call David Rollinson for a guided tour.
